My name is Michelle Zheng, and Lunar Noon is the project that has come out of the last five years of my music-making. Mixing elements of electronic, classical, jazz, choral, and Chinese folk music, it evolved from a bedroom electronic recording project to a collaboration with a set of core bandmates and many additional collaborators from all around the world. Though most of the music has expansive instrumentation that requires a lot of collaboration, the content of the songs is always deeply personal – they are my means of observing and understanding my inner world. Some musical influences include Björk, Imogen Heap, Debussy, Sigur Rós, Esperanza Spalding, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Radiohead, a decade of choral singing, growing up with classical piano, and film/anime/video game soundtracks. Originally from Santa Cruz, CA but based in San Francisco, I am deeply influenced by the sights and sounds of the forests and ocean that surround both of these places, which find their way literally into the music.
Coming out on November 15th, 2024, “A circle’s round” is a 66 minute-long, two-and-a-half year labor of love about discovering the practice of mindfulness and learning to find peace in the wake of pain.
